Niamh Lucey Portfolio - CAD Examples

CAD Examples

For my A2 product design coursework I am making a workbag to fit in a laptop and other files that may want to be carried around. I am looking at current bag trends to create an attractive bag for a formal situation. On this page I have example of cast buckles and zipper tags which I cast myself from pewter after using CAD to create a mould. I also have examples of leather stitching which I had to create in CAD again and send off to the laser cutter to cut out the holes. This is just experimental work but it has given me ideas of how to join the leather of the bag to make it look both professional and aesthetically pleasing to my target market.

Niamh Lucey Portfolio - Making Process

Making Process

For my GCSE Textiles project, I had to do two projects, both a making and then a designing. On this page I have examples of my designing project, where I had a theme based around natural forms. I then had to take inspiration fro current or past trends. I used this example of Alexander McQueen’s SS12 catwalk collection based around marine and oceanic objects. This was a great inspiration in my work, as you can see below. I had designed my own garments using this inspiration based around a target market. All of the garments designed included things such as pearl buttons and coral designs to link in with the current trend set be Alexander McQueen at Paris fashion week. During the project I researched about different materials and techniques that I could use to help with the creation of this garment. I also researched costs and about the market that would be attracted to a garment such as this. I then had to go on to further development and improvements of my garment, ensuring the design was the best it could be. Using fabric swatches on the ideas pages to give an idea of how the garment would look.

In the two bottom examples, I had experimented with fabrics and machinery to try and achieve the desired effect that I was hoping for. This is very useful in the designing process as you can see at an early stage what would need more improvement and how things work.

This was also for my GCSE Textiles project, This is the making side of it. I had to create a garment from a pattern piece and record the making of it. Throughout the project I had to use a wide range of machinery such as a sewing machine, an over locker, an embroidery machine and a heat press. All of these skills have remained with me and I will be able to pick them up again very easily. I have had quite a bit of experience using a sewing machine as I have two in my bedroom and use them quite often.

Niamh Lucey Portfolio - Drawing techniques 2

Drawing techniques

After I had done the 5 hour exam, I had to go on to create another final piece, so I used a current photograph oh him and an old one, from when he was in the army. I then merged the two together to create a middle-aged him. I then went on to draw this in pencil to create my final piece.

AS explained on the previous page, this is my AS final piece. This page displays the process of making the piece and the finished drawing. The whole process was actually rather simple, but during the actual drawing I had to make sure that I used tone, light and made sure that it was actually realistic. I started out using photo shop creating the mashed image of young and old, this was then gridded onto a piece of paper where I then began to draw the outline of the head and shoulder. Then I went on to add the outlines of the face detail. This was then begun to be shaded and then added to in depth to create a finished final piece.

Another example from my AS Art coursework, I did a series of both pencil and biro drawings. The one in the top left corner is a pencil drawing of my Great Granddad which was my final piece as a result of a 5 hour examination. The other drawings on the page were just previous experiments to familiarise myself with drawing faces in great detail and in both biro and pencils. The two biro drawings on the top of the page were from an artist that I researched for this project, he drew in biro and mainly old faces were his topic of interest. He then went on to draw on old envelopes that he found. All of his artworks were extremely detailed and realistic. This is what I hoped to achieve with my versions.

Niamh Lucey Portfolio - Experimenting with Media

Experimenting with Media

A big part of the Art A-level is experimenting with media , I had done several experimentations for all units using a wide range of materials. Ranging from Ink, oil pastels, pencils, acrylic and water colour.  All of these experiments with media make a project fuller and more detailed as a knowledge of materials is very important in all aspects of Art and Design.  It shows concepts in a different light  thereby making different effects from the same picture or source. It is a good way to show a range of ideas as they will all look different and have different effects.

Niamh Lucey Portfolio - Colour and Emotion

Colour and Emotion

My A2 Art project is based around the theme of colour and emotion. Meaning how wearing a bright or dull colour can effect a persons mood. I developed my project by experimenting with colour in both the wax crayon piece above and the felt samples I made. These were done by mixing wool on a felting paddle to create  the desired colours. All of these experimental pieces have helped my project  to transform into a final piece. My final piece is a skirt suit made out of mismatched ties. This is representative of my whole theme of colours and emotions, also the fact  that ties are seen as a formal item of clothing, being transformed into something more fun and thought provoking.  The skirt, so far, is made up of 30 ties, all hand stitched together (totalling to about 50 hours work!) to create a character filled piece of artwork, as well as  a fully functional garment. Along the back of the skirt there are buttons with a lace panel to add detail. The skirt is still in the making process although it  is nearly finished with just the waistband and buttonhole loops to complete. The other garments in my final piece will consist of a suit jacket made in a similar way, but on a machine this time and a shirt made out of a variety of parts of different shirts, again following the theme of emotions and colour effects on different people. This project is still underway but will hopefully be complete by February so I can then move onto my final A2 project.
